William Mckeever

William McKeever is a fiction and non-fiction writer and filmmaker whose books and films address the pressing issues facing America’s ocean wildlife.
His latest book, the novel Return of the Mako (Archway Publications, 2026), is a murder mystery inspired by a true story and centered on a mako shark. Woven through the narrative is the real high-seas brutality makos endure — from shark finning and shark tournaments to other threats at the hands of humankind. “Sharks aren’t the dangerous creatures we should fear,” McKeever says. “It is the sharks that should fear us.”
His previous book is the non-fiction, Emperors of the Deep — The Shark (HarperCollins, 2019). This book explores the groundbreaking science of sharks and their importance to the marine ecosystem, tracing the evolution of the “man-eater” myth and making the case that sharks are to be protected, not feared.
McKeever is also an award-winning director and producer of documentary films, whose work often focuses on the plight of keystone species under pressure from industrial fishing. Through his nonprofit organization, Safeguard the Seas, these films serve as catalysts for regulatory change and public awareness. His current film, The Last Ospreys, shines a light on the starvation of osprey chicks in the Chesapeake Bay and won Best Cinematography for a Short Documentary at the 2026 New York Film and Cinematography Awards. It follows earlier work on sharks and menhaden: Emperors of the Deep dispels the myth of sharks as man-eaters and highlights their vital role in the ocean, while The Biggest Little Fish You’ve Never Seen spotlights menhaden — among the most consequential fish in American history, yet largely unknown — whose overexploitation is upending the marine ecosystem. His films can be seen at RedCoralUniverse.com.
In recognition of his contributions to conservation, McKeever received the Wings Award from the Pegasus Foundation. His commitment to global ocean health extends to his role as Treasurer and Board member of the Great Barrier Reef Foundation USA, which leads science-based efforts to protect the Great Barrier Reef and reef systems throughout the Pacific.
